Division 3 Week Q&A with Brittany Fisher

Division 3 Week Q&A with Brittany Fisher

By: Josh Romero, Athletic Communications Intern

As a part of the 2022 Division III Week from April 4-10, Alfred State Athletics will be unveiling a Q&A to highlight with some Pioneers who embody the ideals of a Division III student-athlete.

  1. Why did you choose Alfred State/Division III?

My hometown is Indianapolis and when I was in high school, I was thinking about where I wanted to go to college. The former head coach contacted me to come see Alfred State. I have never heard of Alfred State in New York so one weekend my dad and I decide to visit the campus to see if I would like it. When I left the campus go home, I couldn't stop thinking about my visit. They have good majors that will help me in the future. The people around here are very nice and will help each other. Also, I love being in the country. It is peaceful and quiet around campus and I've always wanted to play softball in college.

  1. How does being a Division III student-athlete better prepare you in life?

Being a student-athlete has made preparing for life a lot easier, mostly with time management. When I am a student-athlete it can be so busy during your season with school, practice, game-day, homework and I am also an ARD in Mackenzie North. Being successful with time management has prepared me for my life because I know how to handle that much work. Also, it has helped me be more organized by planning my week and/or month ahead of time.

If you want to be a student-athlete in college to make sure know how to do time management and be organized.

  1.  What will you (or do you) miss the most about Alfred State/ your team?

The most important thing that I am going to miss is being on the softball team. My softball career will be over but I am thankful to be part of the softball program at Alfred State. I am going to miss my teammates, coaches and staff that have help me find success in life so far. Also, another thing I am going to miss is how the campus is willing to help each other to make sure you are on the right path in life. If I go back to my hometown, I am going to miss how quiet the campus is because it is not busy all time.

  1. What life lessons have you learned from being a collegiate athlete?

The life lesson that being a collegiate athlete has taught me is to make sure people do understand about me. I am hard of hearing; I was born deaf. The devices that help me is called a Cochlear Implant. I have to explain to people so they can understand how different hearing is for me. The past two years we have gone through the Covid pandemic that no one has and people wearing masks was hard for me because I read lips, but when people are wearing masks that can be hard. We all came to work together to be stronger.

  1.  What is your favorite memory so far at Alfred State?

My favorite memory is being part of the softball program which has been a huge success for me because I have always wanted to play college softball since I was little. Another favorite memory was when I was a freshman, and the softball team went to the ACAA championship game. We came short but we worked so hard as a team and got second. I have so many memories at Alfred State and want to say thank you to all my family, friends, and staff at Alfred State.

  1. What advice would you give incoming freshmen?

The best advice I could give to incoming freshmen is make sure you are having fun and making friends because when you are in college it will go by fast. Everyone needs to make sure they are enjoying their time in college and they will become successful in life. Do not be shy to talk upper classmen, they will not bite you. Also, if you have question ask coaches, players, and staff. They are willing to help no matter what. They want to make sure you are doing good in school and other things too. For everyone who comes in as freshmen make sure be organization and manage your time.
