When the countdown to the Holidays ends, I start a countdown to Spring Break. Spring Break is one of the three times I have been able to travel during my time covering Alfred State Athletics. It is definitely an amazing perk of being in the athletic communication field. During my tenure, I have spent countless hours on buses and have experienced many flights around the country.
Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) and AJ Gartland (Irondequoit) have both been named Players to Watch in the annual Collegiate Baseball Newspaper NCAA DIII preview. Both Alfred State players made the most of the COVID shortened 2020 season.

Last night the Buffalo Bills took on the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football. The last time the two teams met former Alfred State football and track athlete Rod Streater suited up for the 49ers. Watching last night, I kept thinking about following student-athlete stories past their time at Alfred State.
As I sit in my office I can smell the polyurethane being applied to the Orvis Gymnasium floor as contractors are working on the new playing surface for Alfred State student-athletes. The smell made me think of the facility improvements we have seen at Alfred State during my nearly 20 years covering the teams.
As most, I am reflective this week as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday. When thinking through topics for this series I always wanted to include a story about the people I have developed relationships with over my years. Not only my colleagues at Alfred State but the students and student-athletes that I have interacted with.
The Alfred State Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) made three $100 donations to help those in need during the Holiday season. Donations were given to the PLATE, ACCORD's Community Action Angels, and Billy Schu's restaurant.
Recently Director of Athletics Jason Doviak reflected on his time at Alfred State for an article in the college's Alumni magazine. Doviak came to Alfred State in April of 2017 and has been integral in many improvements to the Pioneer athletic department.
Gavin Bathgate, David Benson, and Calum Houper all were top performers as Alfred State student-athletes competed in the AMCC Mental Health 5k. As an athletic department, Alfred State had the most participants as 135 students and staff registered for the event put together to bring mental health awareness during these uncertain times.
