Women’s Basketball Team Can’t Hold On after Impressive Rally

The Wells College women's basketball team trailed by 17 points late in the second quarter but rallied back to take the lead into the fourth quarter before falling to visiting Alfred State by 62-41 on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Down by 27-10, the Express ended the second quarter with an eight-point run to cut the gap to nine. The Pioneers restored their double-digit lead at 11 with the first basket of the third quarter but the Express put on an impressive display the rest of the third. Wells went on a 17-5 run to take a 35-34 lead into the fourth after shooting nearly 54 percent from the field in the third.

Just more than two minutes into the final quarter, the teams were even at 37 apiece. Alfred State's Rayanna Anderson was too hot to handle going 5-for-5 from the field that included a trio of threes and finishing with 13 fourth-quarter points to ignite the visitors.

Jordan Jacobs led the Express with 15 points and five boards, while Maritza Scharoun had a team-high 13 rebounds and three steals to go with five points. Lorissa Parks added eight points and four assists. All of the Express' points coming from starters that included seven from Brittany Kropp and six from Sonia Rivera.

The women's basketball takes to the road with a pair of weekend games beginning with Manhattanville on Friday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. and followed by a contest at Utica on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. The team returns home in one week from today to face Elmira on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m.
