Women’s Volleyball Defeats Alfred State 3-1

ALFRED, N.Y. – Penn State Altoona women's volleyball won its fourth match in a row, as the Lady Lions topped Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Alfred State College 3-1 on Saturday morning at the Orvis Gymnasium.

Alfred State (9-11, 3-6 AMCC) took the opening set 25-23, but Penn State Altoona (10-10, 6-2 AMCC) bounced back to take the next three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-12, and 25-16.

Lydia Mock (Alum Bank, PA/Chestnut Ridge) and Jenna Bauer (Ebensburg, PA/Central Cambria) tied for the team-high in kills with 13 apiece. Mock also put up a season-high 23 digs, while Bauer contributed 11 digs and a team-high three solo blocks. Lauren Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) posted seven kills, 12 digs, one solo block, and one block assist.

Emily Bryan (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) totaled a team-high 25 assists to go along with six kills, five digs, and two service aces. Kayla Moran (Boalsburg, PA/State College) added 11 assists, four digs, two aces, and two kills.

Lexie Dorcon (Berlin, PA/Berlin Brothersvalley) contributed nine digs, and Sara Russo (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) posted two solo blocks and one block assist while chipping in three kills.

In the first set, Alfred State overcame Penn State Altoona's lead to pull out a two-point win. Tied 23-23 late in the set, back-to-back kills by the Pioneers capped the set off.

But the Lady Lions bounced back with a big win in the second set. Up 5-4, Penn State Altoona reeled off nine straight points to expand its lead to 14-4. Alfred State countered with eight consecutive points to narrow the difference to two, 14-12. But Penn State Altoona scored four of the set's final five points, including two kills from Bauer, one kill from Bryan, and a solo block by Russo during that span.

Alfred State worked out to a 7-6 lead to start the third set, but Penn State Altoona outscored the Pioneers 19-5 over the rest of the set. Mock provided six kills during the set to help lead the Lady Lions to a 2-1 lead in the match.

Penn State Altoona overcame a 3-0 deficit early in the fourth set to win by a 25-16 margin. Leading 24-10, Alfred State ripped off a 6-0 run to narrow the gap to 24-16, but a service error provided the match-winning point for the Lady Lions.

Next up, Penn State Altoona women's volleyball has its final home match of the regular season on Wednesday, October 30, when the Lady Lions will host AMCC opponent Pitt-Greensburg at 7:00 p.m. That match will also be Senior Night for Penn State Altoona, as the women's volleyball program will honor seniors Bryan and Diller in a pre-match ceremony.
