ALFRED, N.Y. – The Hilbert College baseball team stole their way to a 6-4 opening game victory at Alfred State before they suffered a 9-2 loss in the night cap. The Hawks moved to 8-17 overall as A-State improved to 5-28 in the non-conference double header played at Alfred State.
Hilbert was credited with eight stolen bases in the early game and
Taylor Haug sprinted to a career-high four stolen bases on the day.
The Pioneers limited Hilbert to just three hits and one RBI in the second game loss.
GAME 1
Hilbert, after Haug scored off a fielding error in the first inning, added a second run in the bottom of the third when
Kevin Moore's single scored Haug.
Alfred State's one run lead in the 5th was short lived once the Hawks picked up their bats in the bottom half.
Eric Flores singled before
Bradley Perrin and
Michael Best walked.
Ryan Perrin was hit by pitch and then
Dalton Reynolds knocked in two more runs off a double which built a 5-3 lead.
Haug scored his third run in the game in the sixth after getting on base with a single. He stole for the third time in the game and once on third base, he made it home off Flores single to center field.
The Pioneers tacked- on one more run but fell short in a come-back.
Flores went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hilbert was credited with six hits and nine walks. Haug scored three of Hilbert's six runs and Reynolds poked in two runs.
Henry Bowers finished with three earned runs, six strike outs, two walks and six hits in five innings pitched.
Michael Goodberry picked-up his second saves of the season.
GAME 2
Back-to-back doubles lifted the Pioneers to a 3-0 lead at the start of the game and they never trailed after that.
Ryan Bonafede's single in the first inning scored Haug, and
Kevin Moore, after his double in the bottom of the fourth placed him on base, scored Hilbert second run off a wild pitch.
The 3-2 score held until the top of the fifth inning when the Pioneers scored six runs off six hits.
Winfred Nelson went 4.2 innings in the loss with three strike outs and three earned runs.
Hilbert will return to action this Tuesday, April 25 with a home double header against AMCC foe, Penn State Altoona. The Baldwin Wallace game was bumped in order to get the conference games in before the end of the season.
