Franz Collects Four Hits

Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) collected four hits in a doubleheader at Emory & Henry (VA). The Wasps improved to 4-7 on the year with 5-0 and 7-4 victories on Saturday.

Franz had one of the Pioneers two hits in the opener. He broke up Gavin Felty's no-hit bid to lead of the 7th inning. Two batters later Jose Martinez (Queens/Newtown) hit a single as well.

Emory & Henry scored single runs in the 1st and 2nd to grab the early lead. They then added two insurance runs in the 5th and another in the 6th. Zach Smith was the only player with multiple hits finishing 2 for 4 with a RBI. Felty allowed just one hit and struck out six in six innings of work to earn the victory.

In the nightcap the Wasps broke a 1-1 tie with a five runs 2nd inning. The Pioneers scored three in the 5th to cut into the lead but couldn't get any closer.

Emory & Henry took the early lead on a Ben Sexton sac fly in the 1st. Austin Baker (Canisteo Greenwood) tied it in the 2nd with a RBI fielder's choice. Josh Macek and Smith collected RBI singles and Carson Bryant drove in two with a double in the 2nd for the Wasps. The inning was extended following a Pioneer error.

Robert Cardona (Harlem/All Hollows) had a RBI single in the 5th and came around to score Franz's second homer of the season. The Pioneers stranded runners in scoring position in the 5th and 6th and Emory & Henry added to their lead in the 6th on Sexton's second RBI, a single, of the game.

Franz was 3 for 3 with 2 RBI while Thomas Shofi (Carmel) was 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles. Daulton Horne was 3 for 4 for the Wasps while Nick Lesnak earned the win on the mound with five innings of work.
