Pioneers Fall in a Pair of Close Contests

The Alfred State baseball team fell in a pair of tight contests, 8-6 and 8-3 in eight innings, to Emory & Henry on Wednesday afternoon at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC.

In the opener, the Wasps stung early and grabbed 5-0 lead with three runs in the 1st and two more in the 2nd. Rafael Perozo (Bronx/St. Raymond) cut the lead to 5-2 with a RBI single in the 3rd.

Emory & Henry scored two more in the 3rd and a single run in the 5th to build the lead to 8-2. In the top of the 7th, the Pioneers tried to cut into the lead. Austin Baker (Canisteo Greenwood) and David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) had RBI singles and Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond) hit a sac fly. The tying run was at the plate when the final out was recorded.

Perozo continued his recent tear with a 3 for 4, 2 RBI day. Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) was 3 for 4.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Thomas Shofi (Carmel) had a RBI single in the 2nd and Jesse Swan (Campbell Savona) scored on a wild pitch. In the 3rd, Franz scored on another wild pitch.

The Wasps cut into the lead with a single run in the 4th and tied the game with a pair of runs in the 5th. The game remained tied until the 8th when Emory & Henry scored fiver runs on six hits to take control of the game.

Shofi finished the day 2 for 3 while Perozo collected his third straight multiple-hit game with a 2 for 4 performance. Perozo has collected 10 hits in the last three games.
