Alfred State sophomore Lucas Cornell (Alfred Almond) fired a no-hitter in the Pioneers 7-1 victory in game two of their doubleheader split at Fisher College. The Falcons took the first game 8-6.
Cornell walked three and struck out four in the complete game no-hitter. The no-hitter is Cornell's first victory wearing the blue & gold and the first an Alfred State pitcher during the NCAA Era. He allowed an unearned run in the 1st inning after a walk and only allowed three bases runners (two walks and an error) the rest of the way.
The Pioneers tied the game up in the 3rd when Marco Marrero (Dychman/City College) scored on an error. Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond) gave Alfred State the lead for good with a RBI groundout in the 3rd. The blue & gold put the game out of reach with four runs in the 6th when Marrero scored on an error, Rafael Perozo (Bronx/St. Raymond) had a RBI fielders choice, Pedro Mora (Washington Heights/AP Randolph) had a RBI single, and Perozo scored on a passed ball. Thomas Shofi (Carmel) scored on a passed ball in the 7th to make it 7-1.
Mora was 2 for 2 with a RBI for the Pioneers in the contest.
In the opener, Fisher used a six-run 2nd inning to take control of the game. They led 8-0 heading into the 6th when the Pioneers put together a rally. in the 6th, Johnson and Shofi had RBI singles and Cornell drove home a run on a fielder's choice. In the 7th, Alfred State loaded the bases with no outs, Shofi drove home a run on a fielder's choice and two more scored on a fielding error by the Falcons to cut it to 8-6. With runners are 1st and 2nd, the Falcons recorded the final two outs to seal the victory.
Franz was 3 for 4 for the Pioneers while Austin Baker (Canisteo Greenwood) was 2 for 2. Johnson finished the game 2 for 3.
Jaime Viallafane was 2 for 3 with a RBI while Angel Perez Vargas was 2 for 3 to lead Fisher. Zach LeBlanc went the distance allowing 11 hits and one earned run to earn the win.
The Pioneers are back in action next weekend with a pair of road doubleheaders. They play at Pitt Bradford on Saturday and at Penn State DuBois on Sunday.
