The Alfred State baseball team collected 12 hits (five for extra bases) in game two as they defeated Pitt Bradford 12-3 to earn a split with the Panthers on Sunday afternoon. UPB limited the blue & gold to four hits took the first game 4-0.
Lucas Cornell (Alfred Almond) got the Pioneers in the 1st inning when he connected on a two-run homer to left field. Jay Clinger cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning with a RBI single.
Andy Pichardo (Queens/Academy of American Studies) extended the lead in the 2nd with a two-run single to center. Dan Woodward (Honeoye) collected a RBI double and Danny Doran (Irondequoit) added a RBI single in the 3rd to make it 6-1.
John Kitchen scored on a throwing error in the 4th and Kyle Hunt made it 6-3 with a RBI fielder's choice but the Panthers would not get any closer.
Austin Baker (Canisteo Greenwood) and Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the 6th. Cornell followed with a RBI groundout and Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond) scored on an error. In the 7th, Baker hit another RBI double and scored on another throwing error
Baker was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI to pace the Pioneers offensive attack. Franz and Doran both were 2 for 4. Reno Chesire (Port Jervis) came out of the pen and threw 3.2 innings of three hit relief. He didn't allow a run or walk a batter while striking out three.
Austin Parent was 2 for 3 while Clinger was 2 for 4 with a RBI.
In the opener, Brady Sass (Cal-Mum) and Ryan Boyer matched scoreless innings until the 5th inning. Austin Parent drew a bases loaded walk following a Pioneer error earlier in the inning. In the 6th, a two-out error extended the inning and allowed Kyle Hunt to collect a two-run single and come around to score on a balk.
Boyer allowed just four hits and three walks while striking out eight in the complete game victory. Baker collected two of the Pioneer hits in the contest. Sass didn't allow an earned run in 5.2 innings. He surrendered four hits, walked six, and struck out three.
Baker had a big day finishing 5 for 6.
The Pioneers travel down the road on Tuesday to Houghton College for a 6 p.m. (please note new time) tilt with the Highlanders.
