Pioneers and Wolves Split

In a tale of two games, Alfred State and Keuka College split a Sunday afternoon doubleheader on the turf at Bolivar Richburg High School. The Wolves exploded for 24 hits in their 22-1 victory in game one while the Pioneers hit two homers and got solid pitching from Garrett Mack (Avon) in their 7-1 victory in the nightcap.

Keuka used three big innings to take full control of the opener. They scored seven in the 2nd, six in the 3rd, and six more in the 5th. The Wolves collected 24 hits including 11 for extra bases. Rob LaRue had a monster game finishing 6 for 6 with five doubles and 4 RBI.

Jesse Swan (Campbell Savona) led the Pioneers eight-hit attack in the opener with a 3 for 3 day while Thomas Shofi (Carmel) was 2 for 3.

The Wolves got on the board first in the nightcap when Dave Nuzzo hit a sac fly in the 3rd inning. The Pioneers took the lead in the 4th when Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) hit his 7th homer, a two-run shot, of the season. Four batters later, David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) connected on a three-run homer to make it 5-1.

Austin Baker (Canisteo Greenwood) added an insurance run in the 5th with a RBI single and Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond) hit a sac fly in the 6th.

Mack earned his first victory with the complete game effort. He allowed five hits (all singles) and five walks while striking out three. Zuber was the long Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 3 with 3 RBI.

All five Wolves hits came from the top two spots in the lineup. Jake Redding was 3 for 4 and Dakota Skinner was 2 for 3.

The blue & gold are slated to play their first game on campus on Tuesday when they host Penn College. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
