Four Run 5th Inning Lifts Wells

Wells used a four-run 5th inning to earn a 4-3 victory over Alfred State on Wednesday evening. The Pioneers stranded 12 runners on base in the contest.

The blue & gold got on the board first when Nick Geyer (Newburgh Free Academy) hit a two-out, 2-RBI double. The double scored Austin Baker (Canisteo Greenwood) and Pedro Mora (Washington Heights/AP Randolph) who had both drew two-out walks.

The Express got on the board in the 5th when Tyler Young scored on a wild pitch. A sac fly by Dylan Nolan tied it up and a pair of RBI singles by Brandon Shirley and Mike Diehr gave Wells the lead.

Baker hit a triple to left center in the 7th to cut the lead to 4-3 but the Pioneers would not get any closer. In the 9th, the blue & gold had two runners on base with one out but Aaron Wintermute struck out the final two batters to seal the victory.

Cullen Franz (Cazenova) was 2 for 4 while Thomas Shofi (Carmel) was 2 for 5. Rafael Perozo (Bronx/St. Raymond) was solid out of the pen for the Pioneers pitching three scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits while striking out four.

Jared Strait earned the win with five innings of work. He allowed three hits and two runs while walking five and striking out nine. Wintermute picked up the save with four innings of three-hit ball. He walked one and struck out six.

Shirley was the lone member of the Express with multiple hits finishing 3 for 4 with a RBI.

This was the second time this season the two teams have met this season. The Pioneers won a 54 decision in Myrtle Beach, SC on March 15th.

The Pioneers will have a few days off before taking on Hilbert on Saturday.
