Pioneers Continue Play in Florida

The Alfred State baseball team played their final doubleheader of their spring training trip to Ft. Myers, FL. The Pioneers fell behind early and fell 14-4 to #6 Wooster and then lost a tight 6-2 battle with Plattsburgh.

The Fighting Scots started off fast as they collected 10 runs on 10 hits in the 1st inning. Connor Pingitore (Amsterdan/Broadalpin Perth) stayed hot and collected a RBI double in the 3rd to get the Pioneers on the board. Wooster scored two more in the 4th and 6th inning before the blue & gold scored two in the 7th. David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) collected a RBI single and Mike Gibson (Schnectady) scored while Zuber was in a run down in between 1st and 2nd. Danny Doran (Irondequoit) capped the scoring in the 8th with a RBI single.

Zuber and Doran both finished 2 for 5 with a RBI to pace the Pioneers.

Versus Plattsburgh, the Pioneers fell behind early again. The Cardinals scored two in the 1st and the Pioneers cut the lead in half when Brody Burnett (Scottsdale, AZ) scored on a double play. Anthony Maag made it 5-1 in the 3rd after a pair of Alfred State errors when he lifted a three-run homer. Plattsburgh added an insurance run in the 7th before the Dan Woodward (Honeoye) hit a RBI double to make it 6-2.

Matthew Triola came out of the bullpen for Plattsburgh and allowed just two hits and four walks in eight innings of work to earn the victory. Lucas Cornell (Alfred Almond) was also very effective out of the pen tossing 6.1 innings of three hit ball. He didn't allow an earned run while walking one and striking out 10.

The blue & gold are back on the diamond on Friday when they take on Skidmore at Noon.
