Pioneers Open up Spring Break Trip with Big Win

Alfred State used a pair of big innings and solid pitching as they opened up their Spring Break trip with a 17-7 victory at Southern Virginia on Saturday. The blue & gold are now 4-3 on the year.

After three scoreless innings the Pioneers got going in the 4th. Nick Serce (Irondequoit) hit a two-run double to left center to get the Pioneers on the board. Justin LoTemple (Greece Athena) followed with a RBI single to right and Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton) made it 5-0 with a double to left center.

The Pioneers added seven more runs in the 5th inning. LoTemple hit a RBI single to left, TJ Lucey (Fairport) and Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) drew bases loaded walks, and Avallone made it 10-0 with another two-RBI double to center. Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond) kept it going with a two-run double to right field and Josh Laurie (LeRoy) finished the big inning with a RBI single to center.

LoTemple added to the lead with a three run homer to left in the 8th and Avallone added a RBI double to center to make it 17-0.

Southern Virginia (9-3) was able to get on the board in the 8th with four runs and added three more in the 9th.

LoTemple led the Pioneers 19 hit attack with a 4 for 5, 5 RBI day. Serce was 4 for 6 with a pair of RBI, Avallone was 3 for 6 with 5 RBI, and Johnson was 3 for 6 with 2 RBI.

Gartland took a shutout into the 8th inning and finished the night allowing four runs in eight innings of work. He allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out six. 
 
The Pioneers head to Lexington, SC to continue their Spring Break trip with a 1 p.m. game vs. Mary Washington.
