Pioneers Split Season Finale vs. Wooster

The Alfred State baseball team wrapped up their spring break trip and their 2020 season by splitting a doubleheader vs. Wooster at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, FL. The Pioneers took the opener 7-4 but fell 15-2 in the nightcap.

Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) got the blue & gold on the board in the 1st when he delivered a RBI double. Jack Henby (Hornell) added an RBI single in the 2nd and Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) came around to score following a fielding error to make it 3-0.

The Fighting Scots tied the game in the 3rd when they scored three runs but the Pioneers retook the lead in the 5th with four runs of their own. Samuel Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck) hit a RBI single and Justin LoTemple (Greece Athena) followed with a three-run homer, his second homer of the season. Wooster got a run back in the 7th but did not get any closer.

Andrew Santobuono (Franklin/Unatego) improved to 3-1 on the year with a complete game effort. He allowed six hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out six. 

Henby finished 2 for 3 with a RBI while Avallone was 2 for 4 with a RBI.

Wooster jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the nightcap with a run on a sac fly by Dan Harwood in the 1st inning. Avallone gave the Pioneers their only lead of the game in the 3rd when he collected a two-run single to score Henby and Pingitore.

The Fighting Scots took over from there and scored five in the bottom of the 3rd and never let the Pioneers back in the game. They five more in the 4th and two runs in both the 5th and 6th.

The Pioneers were held to just four hits on the day. Ryan Santiago (Staten Island/HS of Telecommunications) collected the lone extra base hit, a double in the 4th.

The rest of the 2019-20 athletic year for the baseball team and the athletic department has been cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Pioneers finish their abbreviated 2020 season with a 6-12 record.
