Pioneers Win with Dramatic Ninth Inning

The Alfred State Baseball team played today against Eureka, continuing their spring break trip. The Pioneers won 6-4 with the two winning runs being scored in the ninth inning.

Zachary Morse started the game for the Pioneers on the mound and threw five strong innings. Morse only allowed 3 hits and struck out five in his outing, keeping the Pioneers in the game. Josh Van Bramer entered the game in the 6th inning and threw two innings of shutout baseball.

With the game tied at 3, Bryson Rigsby hit a chopper up the middle that scored Owen Lansing from third, putting the Pioneers up 4-3. In the bottom half of the 8th, Eureka capitalized on an Alfred State defensive error, pushing across the tying run. 

In the top half of the ninth, Sam Dickerson hit a homerun, breaking the tie, his lone hit of the game proved to be the biggest of the day. Nick Serce followed Dickerson with a homer of his own, extending the Pioneer lead to two. Serce's homer was the second of the game for him. Serce hit a solo shot in the fourth and had a single on the day. 

Caden Fortunato earned his first collegiate win in his 2 inning relief appearance to close out the game. Fortunato struck out three hitters and gave up only one hit in the final two innings.

Gavin Moore: Moore went 2-4 with two singles.

Owen Lansing: Lansing went 1-3 with a run scored. 

The Pioneers play again tomorrow against Washington U at 3:30 p.m. eastern time.
