Alfred State Drops Two Games to Open Weekend

The Alfred State Baseball team traveled to Virginia and played against Mary Washington. The Pioneers fell in both legs of the double header 7-2 and 6-5. 

In Game 1:

The game was a pitcher's duel through the first third of the game. The Pioneers got 1 hit in the 2nd inning and surrendered no hits to Mary Washington through the first 3 innings. Mary Washington eventually pushed across a run in the 4th inning and 5 more in the 5th, breaking the game open. The Pioneers answered with runs of their own in the 6th inning. Three straight singles by Tim Holler, Sam Dickerson and Bryson Rigsby pushed across the first run of the game for Alfred State. Jack Curabba reached on an error that pushed another run across. Mary Washington scored another run in the bottom of the 6th to make it 7-2.

In Game 2:

Mary Washington opened the game with a run in the bottom of the 1st inning before Chris Mattoon got himself out of a 1st and 3rd jam with a double play. The Pioneer offense answered with 2 runs in the top of the 2nd and 3rd innings taking 4-1 lead. Owen Lansing hit a double to left field to score Nick Serce and Gavin Moore in the second inning. Sam Dickerson and Bryson Rigsby had RBI hits in the 3rd inning. Mary Washington scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd, tying the game back up at 4. Mary Washington scored more runs in the 7th and 8th innings to take a 6-5 lead and win the game. Christopher Mattoon started the game on the mound for the Pioneers, he threw 7 innings and struck out 5 on the day.

The Pioneers take the field again tomorrow against Washington College.
