Pioneers Split Sunday Doubleheader

The Pioneers played two games today at Washington College against the Shoremen. Alfred State won the first game 12-3 and lost the second game 4-3. 

In Game 1:

Both teams started slow on offense with the Pioneers only mustering 1 hit and Washington going down in order in the first two innings. In the 3rd inning the Alfred State offense exploded for 4 runs on 3 hits, capitalizing on 2 Washington errors. A sacrifice fly by Nick Serce started the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly, and was rounded out by a Gavin Moore single to right field. The Pioneers scored again in the 4th inning with aggressive baserunning. Tim Holler and Sam Dickerson executed a double steal that forced an errant throw and an unearned run as Holler crossed the plate. Holler and Dickerson both got RBI's in the 7th inning to tally onto their productive day. The Pioneer offense stayed strong throughout, with a Nick Serce 3-run homerun to cap off the scoring.

Some other standouts for the Pioneers include:

Ryan Bailey: Bailey threw 5.1 innings for Alfred State and surrendered 3 earned runs. Bailey tallied 9 k's on his day. 

Josh Van Bramer: Van Bramer threw 2.2 innings of relief and gave up only 1 hit. 

Gavin Moore: Moore went 4-4 at the dish with a walk and an RBI.

In Game 2:

The Pioneers scored two runs in the first two innings and took an early lead. Tim Holler led off the game with a double, that eventually scored him on a Bryson Rigsby suicide squeeze. Washington scored in the 3rd inning on a balk, and didn't score again in the 5th. In a 2-1 game entering the bottom of the 5th, Washington hit a 3-run homer to take a 4-2 lead. The game stayed 4-2 until the ninth inning, when Tim Holler scored Gavin Moore on a 2-out double making it a 1-run game. The Pioneers were eventually retired and fell 4-3.

Some other standouts for the Pioneers include:

Spencer Riehler: Riehler gave up 3 earned runs in 6 innings of work and only allowed 3 basehits.

Caden Fortunato: Fortunato threw an inning of relief and got the Pioneers out of a jam in the 8th.

Elijah Barinas: Barinas went 4-4 at the plate with an RBI and some webgems at 3rd base.

The Pioneers are back again tomorrow against Gettysburd at 3 p.m.
