Armstrong Earns 100th Win; Pioneers Sweep Houghton

The Pioneers swept the Houghton Highlanders in a double header today in a battle of the southern tier. The Pioneers extended their winning streak to 5 games, winning 4-2 and 4-3 on the road.

In Game 1:

The Pioneers started off the scoring in the top of the first inning with a Nick Serce double off of the left field wall bringing home Sam Dickerson from first. The Highlanders got on the board in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to center field. Pioneer starter Jon White shut down the Houghton hitters for the rest of the game. In the top of the 6th inning, the Pioneers took the lead with an Elijah Barinas RBI single. Nick Serce then scored on an error by the 3rd baseman, advancing Barinas to second. Tyler Petery also came up huge in a pitch hit opportunity, scoring Barinas on an RBI single. The Highlanders were able to squeak across 1 run in the bottom of the 7th, but the Pioneers fought off the comeback effort with the help of a Josh Van Bramer 1 out save.

In Game 2:

The Highlanders got on the board first by scoring 3 in the bottom of the 4th. The Pioneers answered the next inning by putting up 4 runs of their own. Nick Serce started off the scoring again for the Pioneers with a rocket single to right field scoring Bryson Rigsby from second base. The Pioneers went on to score 3 more runs that inning. Jack Curabba hit a single and forced a two base error that scored two runs. The Pioneers finished the scoring that inning with an Elijah Barinas squeeze bunt that scored Jack Curabba. Houghton was left scorless the rest of the game thanks to reliever Caden Fortunato. Fortunato came in relief in the 4th inning and pitched the rest of the game striking out 4, Fortunato ended the game with a strikeout looking, stranding the winning run on base.

The Pioneers game two victory secured coach Mike Armstrong's 100th career win as a head baseball coach.

The Alfred State Pioneers are back in action at 4 P.M. on 4/5 against the Ithaca Bombers.
