Game Notes:

  • Alfred State and Castleton battle for the second straight year. Last year the Spartans won a 36-23 contest at Pioneer Stadium in front of a large homecoming crowd.  The Pioneers lead 16-13 at half but Castleton outscored Alfred State 23-7 in the 2nd half.
  • The Pioneers look to bounce back from two straight tough losses. The offense has not scored a point the last two weeks and will look to get going vs. a Spartans defense that allowed 32 points last week in a loss to Salve Regina.
  • Senior quarterback Ben Wilkerson made his season debut last weekend vs. the University of Rochester. He completed 63% of his passes but the team only gained 80 yards. Khris Greggs was his favorite target catching eight passes on the day.
  • The Spartans have gotten solid play from their quarterback, George Busharis. Busharis has taken every snap and is completing 62% of his passes. He has thrown for 445 yards and two scores in two games thus far. Soren Pelz-Walsh has caught 11 passes for 193 yards and a score.
  • Lost in the offensive stats from last week was a 52 yard rushing performance by Joshua Hinds. Hinds carried the ball 17 times and had a long of 12 yards.
  • The Spartans defense gave up five scoring plays of more than 20-yards last week vs. Salve Regina. The defense has four sacks and four interceptions on the year already.
  • The Pioneer defense was unable to make a big play last week. They recovered one fumble but did not record a sack or an interception. The offense would benefit from a big play from the defense to set up a short field.
  • Better success on 3rd down will be another key. The Pioneers are just 7 for 48 on the year on 3rd downs. Castleton 13 for 31.
