Pioneers rush past Maritime in season finale

The Alfred State football team racked up 327 yards rushing in a 48-21 victory at SUNY Maritime. The Pioneers finish the 2022 season with a 5-5 record.

Jake Palmer (Albany, NY/Voorheesville) had a big day as he rushed for 226 yards on 37 carries and scored four times. Josh Graham (Hilton, NY/Hilton) added 70 yards on six carries and one score.

Alfred State scored on five of their first six possessions of the game. Palmer started the scoring when he scored from three-yards out to cap a 10-play drive to open up the game. Graham scored just over seven minutes later when he rushed in from four yards out.

Justin Horvath (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) connected with Ben Ba (Harlem, NY/Park East) on a 31-yard pass play with 9:03 remaining in the 2nd quarter to make it 21-0. Under two minutes later, Palmer rushed in from six-yards out. After Maritime got on the board, Horvath connected with Roman Napoleon (Allegany, NY/Allegany Limestone) on another 31-yard pass play to make it 35-7 heading into halftime. 

Maritime and Alfred State traded scoring drives in the 2nd half. Palmer ran in from 28-yards with 2:16 left in the 3rd and capped the scoring when he scored from eight-yards out with just 1:32 left in the contest.

Horvath finished 12 for 23 for 218 yards and two scores. Ba led the receivers with four catches for 60 yards while Napoleon had 51 yards receiving and Jazir Franxois (Springfield, NY/St. Joseph Regional) finished with two catches for 50 yards.

Danny Browning (Eden, NY/St. Francis) and Jeremiah Nixon (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) each had nine tackles to lead the defense. Max Gomes (Delaware, NY/Mahopac) interepted two passes while Anthony Allen (Staten Island, NY/New Dorp) picked off a pass in the 2nd quarter.

Alfred State outgained Maritime 545 to 437 in the game.

This is second straight season that Alfred State has finished .500 or above.
