Pioneers Win Season Opener

The Alfred State lacrosse team opened up their 2013 season with an impressive 16-10 victory over Mohawk Valley CC.  The Pioneers led 16-2 at a time in the 4th quarter before the Hawks.

Brandon Griffin (Corning East) led the blue & gold with eight points on four goals and four assists. Frank Martin (Whitney Point) chipped in three goals and two assists and Dave Ford (Elmont/Sewanhaka) found the back of the net four times.

Keegan Phalen (East Aurora) scored twice and was 4-2 in the faceoff circle while Bradley Murdoch (Auburn) had a goal, two assists, and was 13-6 in faceoffs.  Nate Spoor (Penn Yan) and Marc Hernandez (Mastic Beach/William Floyd) each netted a goal while Michael Maranga (Rockaway/St. Edmund) was credited with an assist.

Mike Alessi (Liverpool) allowed just two goals in the 1st half while making eight saves to earn the victory in net.  Paul Duthoy (Brockport) made nine saves in the second half.

The Pioneers continue their seven game season opening roadtrip on Thursday when they travel to St. John Fisher to take on the JV Cardinals.  Opening faceoff is slated for 4 p.m.
