Teddy Alvarado leads the way for the Pioneers in victory over Houghton

Pioneers Down Houghton - Alvarado Records Eight Points

Teddy Alvarado (Hilton) recorded eight points as Alfred State downed Houghton 16-13 in a battle of cross county rivals. Alvarado finished with six goals and two assists as the Pioneers improved to 6-8 on the year.

Ethan Wrobel and Jonathan Mayer scored in the first 2:36 of the contest to give Houghton an early lead. The Pioneers responded by scoring the next four goals. Alvarado scored with 10:25 remaining, Nathan Crowley (Irondequoit) scored 13 seconds later and then gave the Pioneers a lead they would never give up with 8:22 remaining with his second of the game. Alvarado scored a man-up goal with 7:20 left to make it 4-2. Wrobel scored with just under four minutes left to cut it within one. Alvarado completed the hat trick with just 10 seconds left to give the Pioneers a 6-4 lead after one quarter.

The Highlanders and Pioneers alternated goals in the first half of the 2nd quarter. Nathan Anderson and Mayer scored for Houghton while Alvarado scored in between. Nic Covelli (Carmel) scored with 7:21 to start a 3-0 run for Alfred State. Joe Johnson (Churchville) and AJ Soto (Churchville) scored 41 seconds apart to make it 9-5. Cole Chapman and Anerson answered back with goals before Ian Grana (Greece Odyssey) capped the 1st half scoring with 26 left.

Alvardo and Crowley scored in the first 7:29 of the 3rd quarter to build the Pioneer lead to 12-7. Anderson and the Highlanders never would go away as they scored three of the next four goals. Anderson scored twice while Champman scored once to make it 13-10. Dominic Arresta (Southampton) scored in between the pair of Anderson goals.

Johnson scored with 9:47 reamining in the contest to make it 14-10 and the two teams alternated goals the rest of the way. Anderson scored three times while Grana and Alvarado scored for the Pioneers.

Alvarado finished with a season high eight points to pace the offense. Branden Dickson (Bath) passed out five assists, Johnson had two goals and two assists, and Crowley recorded a hat trick and led the team with 12 ground balls. Grana finished with two goals and an assist while Arresta had a goal and assist. Matt Cobb (Churchville) made 13 saves in net to earn the victory.

Anderson led the Highlanders with seven goals and on assist while Mayer finished with two goals and four assists. Chapman scored twice and had an assist. 

The blue & gold wrap up the regular season on Saturday when they host LaRoche at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, the coaching staff will honor the seniors playing in their final home game.
