AMCC Showcase Goes Down to the Wire

Alfred State and Franciscan battled back and forth all afternoon in the AMCC Showcase contest. The Barons scored four of the last five goals of the game including the game-winner with 3:14 remaining to earn the 15-14 victory.

Teddy Alvarado (Hilton) started the scoring with a pretty goal just 56 seconds into the game but Franciscan scored the next four goals of the quarter to take a 4-1 lead after the 1st. Jonathan Lee scored with 5:22 left, TM Thomas scored with 4:46 remaining, Mike Rosaschi scored a man-up goal with 3:27 left, and Jonas McCaig found the back of the net with 2:41 remaining.

Joe Johnson (Churchville) scored a pair of goals early in the 2nd quarter to get the Pioneers within one, 4-3. His first was assisted by Branden Dickson (Bath) and his second was assisted by AJ Soto (Churchville). TM Thomas and Joe Bartholomaus answered right back and made it a three-goal advantage with goals just 21 seconds apart. Dickson, Alvarado, and Johnson followed that up with a three-goal outburst in 2:03 to tie the contest at 6-6. Rosachi scored a man-up goal with 2:55 remaining to give the Barons a 7-6 lead at the half.

Dan McCartney scored 1:51 into the 3rd quarter but Johnson and Ian Grana (Greece Odyssey) answered right back with goals 23 seconds apart to make it 8-8. McCaig scored three of the next four goals in the contest (Johnson scored once for the Pioneers). to make it 11-9 with 3:43 remaining. Johnson scored twice in a row to tie it up with 2:12 left and Soto gave the Pioneers their first lead since 1-0 with a goal with 55 seconds left.

Soto gave the Pioneers their biggest lead of the day when he scored with 12:53 remaining in the game. With 7:32 left, McCaig started a three-goal run for Franciscan with a man-up goal. McCartney followed 30 seconds later and Rosaschi gave Franciscan a 14-13 lead with 4:28 left. Alvarado tied the game up 13 seconds later after getting a pass from Dickson. 20 seconds after a Pioneer penalty was called, McCartney netted the eventual game-winner with 3:14 left after getting a pass from Bartholomaus.

The Pioneers had a couple chances in the final moments of the game. They turned the ball over twice and a pair of shots in the closing didn't find the mark.

Johnson led the blue & gold with seven goals and one assist while Alvarado had three goals and two assists. Soto finished with two goals and two assists, Dickson had a goal and three assists, and Grana had a goal and two assists. Nick Griffin (Penn Yan) picked up an assist while Nathan Crowley (Irondequoit) led the team with eight ground balls. In net, Matt Cobb (Churchville) made 16 saves.

McCaig led the Barons with five goals and two assists while Rosaschi had three goals and three assists. TM Thomas chipped in two goals and three assists, McCartney had a hat trick, and Jerome Harkins picked up 14 ground balls. Grant McKeown made 12 saves in net to earn the victory.

Franciscan held a 50 to 40 shot advantage in the contest and won 22 faceoffs. The Pioneers were 2 for 7 with the extra man while the Barons were 7 for 17.

Alfred State end the 2018 season with a 7-9 overall record and a 4-1 mark in AMCC play. The team was the AMCC regular season champions.
