Pioneers Roll by Medaille

Seven different Pioneers scored as Alfred State defeated Medaille 15-8 in their AMCC Opener. The Pioneers are now 2-0 at home during the season.

Six different Pioneers scored in the 1st quarter as the blue & gold raced out to a 6-1 lead. Tucker Sutphen (Brockport) got the scoring 2:06 into the game after getting a pass from Eric Passeck (Thomaston, CT). Passeck scored just over two minutes later after getting a pass from Joe Johnson (Churchville Chili). The Mavs got on the board halfway through the quarter but the Pioneers scored the next four to push their lead out after the first 15 minutes. AJ Soto (Churchville) scored with 6:06 left, Nic Covelli (Carmel) scored after getting a long pass from Scott Fingar (Penn Yan), Tyler Baker (Rome Free) scored with 25 seconds left from Passeck, and Johnson scored with just four seconds left after getting a pass from Soto.

Johnson scored three times in the 2nd quarter as Alfred State added to their lead and led 10-3 at the break. Quintin Himko (Johnson City) scored his first of the season to start the quarter before Johnson scored three unanswered goals. Passeck picked up his third of the game on Johnson's first goal (a man-down goal).

The Pioneers once again outscored the Mavericks 4-2 in the 3rd quarter as Passeck scored twice while Johnson and Covelli found the back of the net once. Johnson was credited with a pair of assists in the quarter.

Medaille put together more offensive pressure in the 4th quarter. They outshot the Pioneers 20 to 5 and outscored the Pioneers 2-1. Matt Cobb (Churchville) made eight saves in the quarter while Himko scored the lone goal for the blue & gold after getting a pass from Colin Russell (East Aurora).

Johnson finished the day with five goals and three assists while Passeck had three goals and three assists. Covelli and Himko each netted a pair of goals, Nathan Crowley (West Irondequoit) led the team with eight ground balls, and Cobb finished the day with 12 saves in net.

Tyler Fales led the Mavs with three goals and an assist while Jake Rush finished with a pair of goals and four assists.

Alfred State outshot the Medaille 48 to 36 in the contest and held a slight 42-41 advantage on ground balls.

The Pioneers head to Franciscan (OH) for another AMCC contest. Opening face-off is at 1 p.m.
