Lady Pioneers Win First NCAA Contest

The Alfred State softball team recorded the program's first NCAA DIII victory with a 5-4 win over St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) on Monday morning.  The Lady Pioneers fell 8-3 to Wisconsin-Platteville in their second game of the contest.

The Lady Pioneers took advantage of four walks in the first inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Annie Corrao (Grand Island) had a two-run single to key the inning while the other two runs came across on wild pitches.

St. Joseph's scored two in the 2nd and one in the 5th to cut the lead to 4-3 heading into the final inning.  Aubri Mosier (Rome, PA) hit a RBI double to add an insurance run in the 7th inning to make it 5-3.  The Bears rallied in their half of the inning scoring one run and had the tying run on second when the final out of the contest was recorded.

The Lady Pioneers were held to just three hits in the contest but took advantage of nine walks. Ashlynn Nickerson (Friendship) earned her first victory with a complete game nine-hitter.  She allowed two earned runs, walked four, and struck out six.

Versus Platteville, Alfred State could not overcome a six-run 2nd inning.  Stormi Kruger (Medina) was 3 for 3 with a RBI and a double to account for half of the Pioneers six hits in the contest.

The Lady Pioneers (1-5) return to action in Ft. Myers, FL on Wednesday when they take on Brockport (1 p.m.) and Knox College (3 p.m.).
