Lady Pioneers Down Knox, Fall to Brockport

Lady Pioneers Down Knox, Fall to Brockport

The Alfred State softball team split day four of competition at the Gene Cusic Classic.  The Lady Pioneers fell 12-1 to the College at Brockport and held on for a 8-7 victory over Knox College.

Versus Brockport, the Golden Eagles scored four runs in the 2nd and six more in the 3rd to take control of the contest.  Brockport was helped by five Lady Pioneer errors.  Aubri Mosier (Rome, PA) was 1 for 2 with the blue & gold's lone RBI.

The blue & gold didn't waste much time in their contest with Knox.  They struck for five runs in the 1st inning keyed by a two-run triple by Kristen Jackson (Keshequa).  Brooke Gustin (Wellsville) and Lynn Wood (Westfield) both had RBI singles as well.

The Prairie Fire answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the 1st.  Alfred added and insurance run in the 4th and two more in the 6th to make it 8-3.  In the 6th, Jackson had a RBI single and Gustin drove in a run on a groundout.

Knox didn't go quitely as they scored two and left two runners on in the 6th and then pulled within one with the bases loaded and one out in the 7th.  Ashlynn Nickerson (Friendship) induced a strikeout and a pop out to end the threat and secure her 2nd win on the mound for the year.

The Lady Pioneers collected 14 hits and had five players finish with multiple hits.  Stormi Kruger (Medina) led the way with a 3 for 4 day while Kristen Jackson finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI.  Lura O'Keefe (Allegany Limestone) and Wood were 2 for 4, Katie Jackson (Troy, PA) was 2 for 5, and Gustin finished 1 for 3 with 2 RBI.

Nickerson pitched seven inning allowing 11 hits and six earned runs while walking just one and striking out five.

Alfred State returns to action tomorrow with a pair of games.  They take on UMASS-Dartmouth at 9 a.m. and Smith College at 1 p.m.
