Pioneers and Roos Split

Alfred State and SUNY Canton split a Saturday doubleheader as the Kangaroos took the opener 5-3 in eight innings while the Pioneers won the nightcap 8-0.  The contests were the first home games of the season for the blue & gold.

In the opener, Brooke Gustin (Wellsville) got the Pioneers on the board in the 2nd when she hit a sac fly to score Stormi Kruger (Medina) who had tripled to lead off the inning.  In the 5th, Allison Vargeson (Addison) scored after a throwing error.

Ashlynn Nickerson (Friendship) kept the Kangaroos hitless until one in the 7th.  The Roos got a RBI ground out by Kaylin Switzer and then Jordan Podkladek scored on a wild pitch to tie and send the game into extra innings.

In the 8th, Canton collected five hits and scored three runs to take a 5-2 lead.  Lura O'Keefe (Allegany Limestone) hit a sac fly in the bottom of the inning but the Lady Pioneers couldn't get any closer.

Kruger finished 2 for 3 to lead the Pioneer offense while Podkladek was 2 for 4 with a RBI for Canton.  Nickerson allowed six hits, walked four, and two earned runs while striking out seven in eight innings of work.  Podkladek earned the win with a complete game five hitter. She allowed one earned run while walking two and striking out five.

In the nightcap, Taylor McCarthy (Watkins Glen) fired a four hitter to earn the victory. She walked just one and struck out three.

Aubri Mosier (Rome, PA) hit a sac fly to get the Pioneers on the board in the 1st.  They added to their lead with a four run 3rd inning keyed by two run single by Kristen Jackson (Keshequa).  In the 4th, Mosier and Annie Corrao (Grand Island) picked up RBI in a three run inning.

Lynn Wood (Westfield), O'Keefe, Kruger, and Renee Stanford (Canisteo Greenwood) were each 2 for 3 as the Lady Pioneers collected ten hits.

The Pioneers and Kangaroos continue their four-game series tomorrow with a Noon doubleheader.
