Big Innings Cost Lady Pioneers

The Alfred State softball team was slowed down by big innings in both of their contests on their fifth day of play at the Gene Cusic Classic. Wisconsin-Platteville used a four-run 3rd inning in a 6-4 victory while Brockport used a seven-run 2nd inning in a 10-3 victory.

In the opener, the Lady Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead in the 3rd when Marissa Durkee (Dryden) drove a run on a RBI single up the middle. Platteville answered back with four runs of their own in the 3rd and added insurance runs in the 5th and 6th.

Alfred State didn't go quietly in the 7th. Rebecca Hanrahan (Greene) laced a RBI double and Kelsey Lewis (Johnson City) singled home two to cut the lead to 6-4. With runners at 1st and 2nd, Platteville was able to record the final out of the contest.

Seven different Pioneers picked up hits in the contest while Kelsie Endres and Chelsey Walker both drove home two runs for Platteville.

Versus Brockport, Alfred State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the 1st. Hanrahan collected a RBI single in the inning. Brockport responded in the 2nd inning when theys sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs. Renee Stanford (Canisteo Greenwood) had a RBI single in the 3rd but the Eagles scored two more runs in the 5th and another in the 6th to add to their lead.

The blue & gold conclude their spring trip to Florida on Friday with a pair of games in Cape Coral. They battle Wisconsin-Platteville at 9 a.m. and Knox College at 11 a.m.
