Carlin leads Elmira Past Lady Pioneers

The Alfred State softball team returned to action for the first time since returning from Florida and fell in two battles to Elmira. Elmira, led by a big day by Emily Carlin earned 5-3 and 8-3 victories.

The opener was a back and forth contest. Elmira jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st behind a RBI single by Emily Carlin and a sac fly by Katie Day but Alfred responded right back with two of their own. Claire Hartman (Alden) connected on a RBI double and then stole home.

In the 3rd, Carlin connected on a two-out RBI single but Allison Gibson (Arkport) followed Hartman's second double of the day with a RBI single to tie it up at 3-3.

The game remained tied until the 6th when the Eagles capitalized on two Pioneer errors to get on the board on a Hannah Lundgren sac fly. Elmira added an insurance run in the 7th when Kelsey Condidorio was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Alfred St. had the tying run at plate with one out in the 7th but Condidorio recorded the final two outs to seal the victory.

Hartman led the Lady Pioneers with a 2 for 4 day with two doubles and a RBI while Carlin finished 2 for 4 with 2 RBI for Elmira.

Carlin was key again in game two. She came out of the bullpen and got the Eagles out of a jam in the 5th and then connected on a three-run homer in the 6th to put the game out of reach. Carlin earned the win with three innings of two-hit work.

After Elmira jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, Alfred St. cut it to 4-2 in the 4th when Lura O'Keefe (Allegany Limestone) hit a homer to left center and cut it to 4-3 on a RBI single by Marissa Durkee (Dryden) in the 5th. The Lady Pioneers had the bases loaded in the 5th when Carlin came in and got out of the jam. Her flashy stop of a line drive up the middle led to an inning ending double play.

Elmira took advantage of two errors to start the 6th inning and Carlin lifted a homer over the right center fence to key a four-run 6th inning.

The Lady Pioneers are slated to play again next Thursday when they travel to Medaille for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
