Lady Pioneers Complete Weekend Sweep

The Alfred State softball swept SUNY Canton for the second straight day defeating the Kangaroos 11-7 and 10-3. The Lady Pioneers are now 11-21 overall and 10-10 since returning from their southern trip.

Alfred State jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the opener after scoring four in the 1st and two more in the 3rd. The Pioneers collected just one hit in the 1st but took advantage of four walks and four wild pitches to plate four runs. Rebecca Hanrahan (Greene) and Allison Gibson (Arkport) both collected RBI doubles in the 3rd.

Canton cut the lead to 6-3 with two in the 4th and a single run in the 5th but the Lady Poineers responded with five more runs in the 6th. Katie Jackson (Troy, PA) and Claire Hartman (Alden) sandwiched RBI singles around a 3-run double by Lura O'Keefe (Allegany Limestone).

The Kangaroos scored a run in the 6th and plated three in the 7th but couldn't get any closer.

Hartman was 2 for 3 with a RBI while Jackson and Hanrahan were each 2 for 4 with a RBI. Mosier and Allison Vargeson (Addison) also collected two hits. Hanrahan picked up the win on the mound, her sixth of the season.

Stephanie LaValley was 2 for 4 for Canton with a pair of solo homers. Stephanie MIller and Shannon Dowling were each 3 for 4.

In the nightcap, Canton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st but the Pioneers rallied for three in the 2nd. Jackson hit a RBI single and two runs scored on wild pitches. The blue & gold took the lead for good in the 5th when Mosier connected on a two-run, two-out single.

In the 6th, O'Keefe connected on her third homer of the season to add to the lead. In the 7th, Gibson hit a RBI ground out and Taylor McCarthy (Watkins Glen) collected a RBI single.

McCarthy was 2 for 2 with a RBI and pitched a compete game six hitter to earn the win. Mosier was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI while Hartman was 2 for 4.

Dowling was 3 for 3 with 2 RBI to lead Canton.

During the four-game series in Canton, the Lady Pioneers scored 41 runs and collected 43 hits.

The Lady Pioneers are back in action on Wedneday when they host Penn College in a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
