Slow Starts Hurt Lady Pioneers

The Alfred State softball team was unable to overcome slow starts as they fell 8-1 to UMASS-Dartmouth and 11-8 to Geneva (PA) on day four of the Lady Pioneers spring break trip to Ft. Myers, FL.

UMASS-Dartmouth scored two runs in the 1st and three more in the 4th before the Lady Pioneers collected their first hit. They led 6-0 when Alfred State scored their lone run of the game on a RBI single by Claire Hartman (Alden). UMASS added two insurance runs in the 7th.

No Lady Pioneer had multiple hits and the team was slowed down by six walks.

Geneva plated seven runs in the 1st inning to jump to the early lead but the blue & gold never gave up and chipped away at the lead. Katie Jackson's (Troy, PA) connected on a 2-RBI single in the 6th to make it 9-8 but Geneva added two runs in the 7th to hang on to the victory.

Kelsey Lewis (Johnson City) was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, Stormi Kruger (Medina) was 2 for 3 with a RBI, and Jackson was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. The Lady Pioneers outhit Geneva 10 to 6 but the Golden Tornadoes took advantage of 17 Alfred State walks.

The Lady Pioneers are back at the Centry Field Complex on Tuesday for a 9 a.m. contest vs. Wooster (OH) and a 1 p.m. game vs. Salem State (MA).
