Lady Pioneers Fall in Wild Extra Inning Contest

Alfred State and Penn College battled in a 3 hour 14 minute marathon that featured 39 runs, 28 hits, 36 walks. The Lady Pioneers scored three runs in the 7th to tie it at 14-14 before the Wildcats scored nine in the 8th en route to a 23-16 victory.

The Wildcats started fast with three runs in the 1st but the Pioneers answered with three of their own in the 2nd. Katie Jackson (Troy, PA) had a RBI single and Stormi Kruger (Medina) drew a bases loaded walk in the inning.

Penn College regained the lead in the 3rd with an eight run outburst and added a single run in the 4th to make it 12-3. Amanda Rockefeller (Bolivar Richburg) drew a bases loaded walk in the 4th to make it 12-4.

The Wildcats added two more runs and were up 14-4 before the Lady Pioneers mounted a comeback. Lura O'Keefe (Allegany Limestone), Kruger, Rockefeller, and Melissa Barber (Nassau/Catholic Central) all drew bases loaded walks in the 5th. Courtney McDaniel (Arkport) followed with a 2-RBI single and Kelsey Lewis (Johnson City) capped the inning with a RBI single to make it 14-11.

In the bottom of the 7th, McDaniel collected a RBI single and Claire Hartman (Alden) hit a two-out 2-RBI single to tie it.

In the top of the 8th, Penn College collected seven hits and scored nine runs to take back the lead for good. Kruger and McDaniel picked up RBI singles in the bottom of the 8th but the Pioneers could not get any closer.

McDaniel finished 3 for 4 with 4 RBI while Hartman was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI. Jackson was 3 for 6 with a RBI and Kruger was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI.

The second game of the doubleheader was suspended due to darkness after three innings. It is unknown if the game will be picked up later in the season.

The Lady Pioneers are back in action on Saturday when they host St. Lawrence in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
