Lewis Collects Four Hits vs. Canton

Kelsey Lewis (Johnson City) collected four hits for the Alfred State in a doubleheader at SUNY Canton on Saturday afternoon. The Kangaroos won a back and forth 10-7 decision in the opener and used a seven run 5th inning in a 11-3 victory in the nightcap.

The Pioneers and Kangaroos traded the lead back and forth in the opener that featured 17 runs, 20 hits, 11 walks, and six errors. 

Stormi Kruger (Medina) collected a two-run single in the 1st to give Alfred State the early lead. Canton answered back with a three-run double by Steffanie Miller in the 1st and a three run homer by Shannon Dowling to take a 6-2 lead.

The Lady Pioneers rallied for three runs in the 3rd behind RBI ground outs by Lura O'Keefe (Allegany Limestone) and Melissa Barber (Nassau/Catholic Central) and a RBI double by Lewis. In the 5th, O'Keefe delivered a RBI hit and scored in the 4th to give the Lady Pioneers a 7-6 lead.

Canton retook the lead for good in the 4th when they took advantage of a bases loaded walk and a run scoring wild pitch. They added to their lead in the 6th when Miller hit a solo homer and Rachel Thornhill delivered a RBI single. 

Kruger and Amanda Rockefeller (Bolivar Richburg) were each 3 for 4 on the day while Lewis was 2 for 4.

In the nightcap, Canton got on the board in the 1st before the Pioneers rallied for two runs in the 2nd. Courtney McDaniel (Arkport) scored on a passed ball and Lewis drove in a run on a RBI single. After the Roos tied it up in the 3rd, Lewis gave the Pioneers a 3-2 lead when she scored on a passed ball in the 4th. 

Canton took over from there plating two runs in the 4th and putting together a seven run 5th inning to take control of the game.

Lewis was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 2 with the Pioneers lone RBI of the game. She finished the doubleheader 4 for 6.

The blue & gold are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Elmira for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
