Lady Pioneers Tripped up by Houghton

Houghton College swept a doubleheader from Alfred State at the Kerr Pegula Athletic Complex. The Highlanders earned 7-2 and 3-2 victories on a frigid evening.

In the opener, Houghton scored four runs in the 1st and added single runs in the 2nd and 3rd to take a 6-0 lead. Kelsey Lewis (Johnson City) collected a RBI double in the 5th but the Highlanders answered back with a run of their own. Melissa Barber (Nassau/Catholic Central) made it 6-2 in the 6th with a RBI ground out but the Lady Pioneers were unable to get any closer.

In the nightcap, the Lady Pioneers got on board in the 1st when two runs scored on a Stormi Kruger (Medina) double.  Houghton cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the 1st and took the lead with two runs in the 4th. Alfred State stranded two runners in the 6th and another runner in the 7th but was unable to tie the game up.

Lura O'Keefe (Allegany Limestone) was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 3.

The Lady Pioneers wrap up the season on Friday when they host Hilbert in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
