Pioneers Open up 2017 Season

The Alfred State softball team dropped both games of a season opening doubleheader in Myrtle Beach on Saturday. The Pioneers lost a tight 6-3 battle to Johnson State after falling 19-1 to Rutgers Camden in their opener.

Versus Johnson State, Jillian Kahn (Dansville) tripled in the 1st inning and scored on a RBI groundout by Annie Corrao (Grand Island). Johnson State tied it in the 3rd on a RBI triple by Anna Bingham.

In the 4th, Stormi Kruger (Medina) doubled home Corrao and then scored on a double steal to give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead. Bingham picked another RBI double in the 5th and scored on a RBI triple by Kaitlyn Woodward to tie it up.

The Badgers took the lead in the 6th when Emily Graves scored on a fielders choice and added to their lead with two runs in the 7th.

Kruger was 2 for 3 with a RBI while Kahn and Aubri Mosier (Rome, PA) collected extra base hits. The Pioneers had six hits in the game.

Bingham was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI for Johnson State while Woodward collected two hits and the win on the mound.

In the opener, Rutgers Camden exploded for 13 runs in the 2nd and never looked back. The Scarlet Raptors collected 15 hits in the contest and were led by Jessica Thompson who was 3 for 4 with 3 doubles and two RBI. She also struck out eight and allowed just five hits to earn the win in the circle.

The Pioneers collected five singles in the game. Kruger had a RBI single in the 3rd and Aubri Mosier (Rome, PA) collected her 100th career hit with a single in the 2nd inning.

The Pioneers are back in action at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic in North Myrtle Beach, SC tomorrow when they are slated to play Rutgers Camden at 9:30 a.m. and SUNY Canton at 11:30 a.m.
