Pioneers Wrap up Home Slate in Grand Style

Aubri Mosier (Rome, PA) hit a two-out grand slam to lift Alfred State to a 8-4 victory in game two as the Alfred State softball split their home finale vs. Houghton. The Highlanders took the opener 11-4.

In the back and forth nightcap, the Pioneers grabbed an early lead on a RBI single by Aubri Mosier (Rome, PA). Houghton answered in the 2nd with a RBI single by Justine Phllips and a RBI groundout by McKenzie Marti. In the 3rd, Annie Corrao (Grand Island) and Courtney McDaniel (Arkport) hit RBI singles to make 3-2.

The Highlanders took back the lead in the 5th on a RBI double by Taylor Sile and a RBI single by Kaylee Jentsch but the Pioneers once again fought back with a big 6th inning. Corrao tied it up with a two-out RBI single. After Kruger was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Mosier took the 2-2 offering over the center field fence for the grand slam, her first and the team's first homer of the season.

Mosier finished 3 for 4 with 5 RBI while Corrao was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI. Jordan Leonard (Lancaster) earned the victory on the mound allowing seven hits and four earned runs.

In the opener, Houghton scored in every inning as they collected 14 hits. Sile led the attack with a 4 for 5, 2 RBI performance. Phillips and Marti were both 2 for 3 while Bailey Shattell was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI.

After a Jenny Young RBI groundout in the 1st, Alexis Bradshaw (Brighton) tied it up with a RBI single and Kruger scored on an error to the give Alfred State the 2-1 lead. Shatell collected a RBI single in the 2nd and Jentsch hit a RBI double in the 3rd to give the Highlanders back the lead. Kruger tied it up in the 3rd when she scored on a wild pitch and Trisha Shingleton (Byron Bergen) made it 4-3 with a RBI groundout.

Houghton took the lead for good with three-run 4th inning. Shattell collected a RBI on a grounder, Young hit a RBI triple, and Sile capped the inning with a RBI single to left. Shatell collected her third RBI with a single in the 5th while Kaylee Jentsch hit a sac fly in the 6th, The Highlanders added three insurance runs in the 7th on a RBI single by Sile and a two-RBI single by Barbara Richert.

Kruger collected two of the Lady Pioneers hits in the opener. She was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

The blue and gold wrap up the 2017 campaign on Saturday when they travel to Nazareth for a Noon doubleheader with the Flyers.
