Pioneers Battle Spartans

The Alfred State softball team played in the rain in Buffalo on Thursday. D'Youville was able to take both halves of the doubleheader, 19-2 and 9-0.

The Pioneers got on the board in the 1st inning of the opener when they loaded the bases with one out and Betsy Butlak (Angola/Lake Shore) delivered a two-run single. In the bottom half of the inning, which featured two weather delays, the Spartans scored 11 runs to to take control of the contest. They added six more in the 2nd and two in the 3rd. Ashley Carney and Jackie Langer each collected a pair of hits and a pair of RBI.

In the nightcap, Brittaney Goodrich tossed a five inning no-hitter as the Spartans completed the sweep. Goodrich walked one and struck out five. D'Youville scored two in the 1st, two in the 3rd, three in the 4th, and two in the 5th. Five Spartans collected two hits in the contest.

The Pioneers are back in action on Friday when they play their home opener. They take on Cazenovia in a a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
