Pioneers Rally to Defeat Curry, Split Day Two

The Alfred State softball team rallied with three runs in the 6th to defeat Curry (MA) College to split day two of their trip to the Gene Cusic Classic. They defeated the Colonels 3-2 after falling 9-3 to Wimington earlier in the day.

In the nightcap, Curry scored single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings to grab the lead. The game remained 2-0 until the 6th when the Pioneers rallied. Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN), Krista Lovell (Addison), and Varela hit back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases. Arianna Traugott (Elmira) followed with an RBI single to left center and one batter later Betsy Butlak (Angola/Lake Shore) beat out an infield single to shortstop to tie it. Varela came around to score on the same play when the throw was pulled the first basemen off the bag.

Curry put two runners on base in the top of the 7th but Traugott got a pair of fly outs to end the contest and secure the victory.

Traugott was 2 for 3 with a RBI to pace the Pioneers eight hits and earned the win with two innings of relief on the mound. She allowed four hits and struck out one. Fisher threw the first five innings and allowed five hits and two runs while walking one and striking out three. 

In the opening game versus Wilmington, the Quakers got on the board in the 1st on a RBI groundout. The Pioneers tied it in the 2nd Traugott, who had collected a single to right, scored on a throwing error. Wilmington took control of the game in the 3rd when they took advantage of three errors and plated seven runs. They added another unearned run in the 5th.

Traugott scored her second run of the day when she scored on a wild pitch after collecting her second single of the game. Varela hit a deep double to right field in the 6th to plate Audrey Farrell (York) to make it 8-3 but the Pioneers would not get any closer.

Traugott and Farrell both finished 2 for 3 on the day while eight different Colonels collected hits in the contest.

Day three of action returns to Century Link Sports Complex in Ft. Myers, FL as the Pioneers take on Anna Maria at 11 a.m. and Oneonta at 1 p.m.
