Softball Begins Spring Break Games

The Alfred State Softball team started off their week in Naples, Florida against SUNY Cobleskill and Westfield State. The Pioneers lost the first game 10-4 and the second game 4-1.

In Game 1:

Cobleskill started off the first with two runs on the board that were quickly answered in the second inning by the Pioneers. Off a sacrifice fly, Lauryn Engle (Elba, NY) was able to bring Nicole Youngberg in for their first score of the game. However, the Tigers had a strong third inning, breaking it open with six hits and tallying six runs. The Pioneers fought back in the sixth inning, scoring three runs which were highlighted by a two-run double by Engle, giving her 3 RBI on the day. Audrey Farrell (Batavia, NY) also had two hits for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers pulled a softball rarity in the top half of the second inning.  Cobleskill had the bases loaded with no outs when Emma Rae Easton lofted a short fly ball to centerfield.  Sarah Boyce (Cortland, NY) made a running catch and, with no Tigers runners tagging, threw the ball to second baseman Nicole Youngberg (Falconer, NY), doubling the runner off second.  Youngberg wheeled and threw to first baseman Felecia Capito (Cuba, NY) to also double the runner off first, resulting in a triple play for Alfred State.

Abby Beidel (Newville, PA) took the loss for the Pioneers with her complete game five strikeout outing.

In Game 2:

Alfred State dropped game two of the day against Westfield State by a 4-1 score. The Pioneers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, off of a throwing error by the first basemen which resulted in lead off hitter, Boyce, scampering home from third. Westfield State responded quickly, scoring two in the second on a double to centerfield. The Owls then tacked on a single run in the third to take a 3-1 lead before adding one more run in the sixth inning to secure the 4-1 victory. Offensively, Youngberg, Farrell, and Engle had hits for the Pioneers.

Farrell falls to 0-1 in the season with her complete game two strikeout performance.

The Pioneers are back in action tomorrow against Crown and MCLA to continue their week in the Gene Cusic Classic.
