Pioneers Split in Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

The Alfred State Softball team continued play today in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, winning the first game against West Connecticut State 6-4 and dropping the second against Rochester Institute of Technology 3-1.

In Game 1:

Hailey Smith got her first career start for the Pioneers and had an excellent day on the mound. Smith only gave up four runs and seven hits total, resulting in the Pio win. Audrey Farrell led the team with three RBI while the team grabbed ten hits overall. The Pioneers made the most noise in the sixth inning, after getting down 4-1 on the scoreboard, off a Farrell triple with bases loaded that brought Olivia Kratts, Abigail Marinelli, and Caley Larsen to home plate. Feeling the momentum shift, Tiante Murray stepped up with a sacrifice fly for a Farrell RBI. Taking a 5-4 lead, Lauryn Engle capped off the inning with a singled RBI to plate Adriana Duval, securing now a 6-4 lead which would end up being the final winning score for the Pioneers.

In Game 2:

The Pioneers started the game strong, taking full advantage of several R.I.T. errors. Audrey Farrell scored on a wild pitch to put Alfred State on the board early, but both team's would have a defensive battle the next three innings. The Tigers would tie the game early in the fifth inning before adding two more runs to secure the win over the Pioneers 3-1.
