Caver Nets 29 in Tight Contest vs. SUNYIT

Marcedes Caver (Cleveland, OH) scored 29 points but SUNYIT hit their foul shots down the stretch to sneak past Alfred State 67-62 on Saturday afternoon.  The Wildcats improve to 5-4 on the year while the Lady Pioneers are now 3-6.

The Lady Pioneers led by as many as eight in the 1st half (17-9) but SUNYIT went on a run and led at halftime 30-29.  The Wildcats led by as many as nine in the 2nd half (44-35 and 49-40) but Alfred rallied to tie the game up at 59-59 with 2:06 remaining after a three-point play by Caver.

Lauren Knowles made a layup on SUNYIT's next possession which started a 8 to 3 run to close out the game.  The Wildcats were 6 for 6 down the stretch from the line.

Caver finished the day 12 for 24 (3 for 7 from three) to lead all scorers with 29.  She also added nine boards and three assists.  Helena Covington (Elmira Free) chipped in 11 points while Briana Meehan (Whitesville) and Destiny Brito (Manhattan/Park West) each finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

Alfred State shot 32.5% from the field for the game but was just 3 for 15 from beyond the three-point arc.

Abbey Hanehan led the Wildcats with 20 poins while Nijah Townsend came off the bench to chip in 10 points.  Deasia Goodson, Lauren Knowles, and Geena Gallo all finished with nine.  SUNYIT shot 34.9% from the field but hit 22 of their 33 foul shot attempts.

The match-up featured Pioneer coach Gina Boyd squaring off vs. former player Jessica Skelton.

Alfred State hits the road again on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. tip-off with Wells College.
