Pioneers Tripped up in OT
Alfred State scored the first basket in overtime but Mercyhurst outscored the Lady Pioneers 11 to 4 the rest of the way to earn a 78-73 victory. The Lady Saints are now 14-9 on the year while the Lady Pioneers are 8-10.
In a game that featured nine lead changes and nine ties it was Helena Covington's (Elmira Free) two foul shots with 19 seconds remaining to knot the game up at 67-67. MNE had a chance to win it in regulation but their last second shot did not fall.
Alfred led by as many as eight in the 1st half and held a 32-30 lead at the break but the Saints controlled the play in the 2nd half and led by as many as eight.
Marcedes Caver (Cleveland, OH) led the three Lady Pioneers in double figures with 23 points and eight rebounds. Briana Meehan (Whitesville) finished with 17 points and Covington recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 boards. Jennifer Fedrick (Buffalo/Bennett) chipped in eight points and nine rebounds.
MNE's bench led the way with 49 of their 78 points. Crashoona Wynn led the Saints with 20 points and 10 boards and Lacey Miller chipped in 14 points and 14 rebounds. Kashawnna Sampson also finished with 10 points.
Alfred shot 35.4% from the field and was only 2 for 14 from beyond the arc while Mercyhurst shot 41.7% from the field and was 7 for 23 from three. Offensive rebounds were key to both teams offensive attacks. The Pioneers grabbed 24 offensive boards and 17 second chance points while the Saints grabbed 19 boards that led to 19 second chance points.
The blue & gold hit the road for the final time in the 2013-14 season on Saturday when they travel to Central Penn College for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
