Lady Pioneers Hang On to Knock Off Maine-Fort Kent

The Alfred State women's basketball team improved to 7-4 with a 60-56 victory over Maine-Fort Kent on Saturday afternoon. Three Lady Pioneers finished in double figures as the blue & gold knocked off the #4 team in the USCAA.

The Lady Bengals lead early and held their biggest lead of the contest, 18-12 with 6:58 remaining in the 1st half. The Lady Pioneers responded by finishing the half on a 20-10 run to head into the break leading 32-28. Maine Fort Kent grabbed a 37-36 lead with 16:53 remaining in the contest but the Lady Pioneers retook the lead and never gave it back the rest of the way. 

Jennifer Fedrick (Buffalo/Bennett) and Helena Covington (Elmira Free) each had 11 points to lead the Lady Pioneers. Haley Witchella (Oxford) recorded a double double with 10 points and 10 boards. Jackie Lieb (Hornell) was key off the bench with seven points and six rebounds while Destiny Brito (Manhattan/Park West) finished with four points, 11 boards, six assists, and three steals.

Samantha Carapellucca led Maine Fort Kent with 19 points and 21 rebounds. Danielle Carrillo finished with 11 points and Ericka Saucier netted ten points and grabbed 11 boards.

Alfred State shot 35.3% from the floor while Fort Kent shot 27.1%. The Bengals were 17 for 24 from the foul line while the Lady Pioneers struggled shooting just 10 for 21. 

The blue and gold, ranked #11 in the USCAA, are back at it on Tuesday when they host Pitt-Titusville at 6 p.m.
