Lady Pioneers Battle D'Youville into OT

D'Youville outscored Alfred State 10-2 in the overtime period as the Spartans defeated Alfred State 71-63 on Tuesday. The Spartans hit 19 of their 31 foul shots, including 6 of 10 in the extra session in the contest.

Alfred State raced out to a 15-4 lead in the 1st quarter but the Spartans rallied and sent the game into halftime knotted at 30-30. D'Youville held a slight 48-45 lead after the 3rd quarter but the Lady Pioneers bounced back and led 61-59 with 50 seconds after a lay-up by Chelsea Carl (Jasper Troupsburg). With 33 seconds left Shannon Dougherty grabbed her own miss and was fouled. She hit two foul shots to tie the game. The Lady Pioneers had two shots in the final seconds but could not get the game-winner.

Both teams hit shots in the first minute of the overtime session but the Spartans held the Pioneers off the board the final 4:05 of the extra frame. Alfred State was 0 for 6 and had three turnovers during that stretch while D'Youville was 1 for 3 from the field and 6 of 10 from the line.

Hannah Carlson (Lynbrook) connected on five 3-pointers and led Alfred State with 15 points. Breana Gleaton (Waldorf, MD) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards while Carl came off the bench and had 10. Minnie Robinson (Washington DC) chipped in nine points and eight assists. 

The Lady Pioneers shot 31.4% from the field, connected on seven 3-pointers, and hit 2 of 3 from the foul line. The Lady Pioneers held a slight 54-51 advantage on the boards but was called for 24 fouls compared to D'Youville's 11.

Dougherty led the Spartans with 28 points on 10 of 24 shooting. Danette Laguerre had 11 points and 11 rebounds while Jordan Smith also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.

D'Youville shot 34.3% from the field, hit six 3-pointers, and 19 of 31 foul shots.

The Lady Pioneers are back at it on Sunday when they travel to John Carroll for a 3 p.m. tip-off with the Blue Streaks.
