Poor Shooting Slows Down Lady Pioneers

After a fast start, the Alfred State women's basketball team went cold and never could get going again in a 52-36 loss to Houghton on Thursday evening.

The blue & gold connected on four 3-pointers and raced out to a 20-11 lead after the 1st quarter but shot 11% the rest of the game. Houghton had a solid 2nd quarter, holding a 22-4 advantage, to take the lead for good. The Lady Pioneers cut the lead to five, 35-30, in the 3rd quarter but never got any closer.

Chelsea Carl (Jasper Troupsburg) led Alfred State with seven points off the bench. Hannah Carlson (Lynbrook) and Steffanie Preston (Groton) both chipped in six while Jackie Lieb (Hornell) finished with five points and a team high 12 boards.

Elle Reed led the Lady Highlanders with 13 points while Maisi Pipher recorded a double-double with 11 points and 14 boards. Hannah Manwaring, Esther Webb, and Madison Detwiler all had six.

Alfred State finished the day shooting 20.3% while Houghton shot 26.5%. The Lady Pioneers held a 57 to 50 advantage on the boards but was slowed down by 24 turnovers.

The Lady Pioneers close out the 2015 portion of their season on Sunday when they travel to Fredonia for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
