Lady Pioneers Win 2016 Opener

The Alfred State women's basketball team used an 8-0 run in the 4th quarter to lift the Lady Pioneers to a 56-50 victory over Keuka on Wednesday evening. The Lady Pioneers trailed 43-42 with 3:44 remaining before going on the deciding run.

The Lady Pioneers raced out of the gate and led 23-15 after the 1st quarter. Keuka cut the lead to 34-29 at the half and the game was tied at 37-37 heading into the final ten minutes. Keuka took their first lead since the 1st quarter but the Lady Pioneers had key three-pointers from Jackie Lieb (Hornell) and Hannah Carlson (Lynbrook) to key their late run.

Lieb led the Lady Pioneers with 12 points. She connected on three 3's in the 1st quarter. Breana Gleaton (Waldorf, MD) finished with 11 points, Kelly Kane (Wellsville) added eight points and nine boards, and Joselyn Johnson (Geneva) and Steffanie Preston (Groton) each chipped in six.

Katie Stuart led the Wolfpack with 13 points while Sarah Janson and Courtney Boyea each finished with eight.

The blue & gold shot 45.5% (20 for 44) from the field, 40% from three (6 for 15) and hit 10 of their 23 foul shots. Keuka shot 30.2% (16 for 53) from the field, 33.3% (6 for 18), and hit only 12 of 32 from the foul line. Keuka held a slight 41-37 advantage on the boards.

The Lady Pioneers head to SUNY Poly on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip-off with the Wildcats.
