Big 2nd Quarter Lifts Houghton in Season Opener

Houghton outscored Alfred State 27-11 in the 2nd quarter as they defeated Alfred State 76-56 in the season opener for both teams.

The Pioneers and Highlanders battled to a 14-14 tie after the 1st quarter but Houghton was 7 for 11 from the floor and 11 of 15 from the foul line in the 2nd quarter to grab a 41-25 lead at half. Houghton outscored Alfred State 35-31 in the 2nd half and didn't allow the Pioneers back into the game.

Breana Gleaton (Waldorf, MD) was the lone Pioneer in double figures finishing with 10 points and six rebounds. Kelly Kane (Wellsville) finished with nine points while Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) and Steffanie Preston (Groton) both chipped in seven points.

The Lady Pioners shot 30.9% from the field, hit 5 of 13 three-point attemps, and was 9 of 13 from the foul line. Alfred State held a slight 45 to 43 advantage on the boards but was slowed down by 22 turnovers and 20 fouls.

Hannah Manwaring led the Highlanders and was one of four starters in double figures with 18 points and led the team with 12 rebounds. Ellie Reed added 13, Brittany Lenart chipped in 12, and Madison Detwiler had 10.

Houghton shot 45.2% from the field, 31.8% from three, and 68.4% from the foul line.

The blue & gold head to the Albany Pharmacy tournament this weekend. They take on Villa Maria at 5 p.m. in the tournament opener. APHS takes on Mount Holyoke in the other 1st round contest.
