Lady Pioneers Can't Rally All the Way Back

The Alfred State women's basketball team trailed by as 16 but fought back to within three but could not grab the lead in a 70-66 to Villa Maria in the 1st round of the Albany Pharmacy Tip-Off Tournament.

The Vikings led 34-28 at the break but expanded to their lead to as many as 16 in the 3rd quarter. In their big 3rd quarter, Villa Maria outscored Alfred State 27 to 17. The Lady Pioneers fought back in the final 10 minutes cutting the lead to just three, 69-66 with under a minute left but the blue & gold could not get any closer.

Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) had a monster game finishing with 24 points and 21 rebounds. Breana Gleaton (Waldorf, MD) also recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards. Kimberly Levee (Dansville) came off the bench and added 13.

The Lady Pioneers struggled shooting. They shot 31.6% from the field, 16.7% from three, and only hit 50% of their foul shots (11 for 22). The team did hold a 57 to 46 rebounding advantage.

Jayvonna Kincannon led the Vikings with 30 points while Shaquana Owens finished with 20. Villa shot 36.2%, connected on 10 three-pointers (38.5%), and hit 55.6% from the foul line.

The Lady Pioneers will play the host team Albany Pharmacy in the consolation game tomorrow. Tip-off is slated for Noon. APHS fell 64-60 to Mount Holyoke in the other 1st round game.
