Lady Pioneers Win 2017 Opener

The Alfred State women's basketball team used a team effort to defeat D'Youville 74-63 in their opener of the 2017 portion of their season. The Lady Pioneers are now 5-4 on the season.

The Lady Pioneers led throughout the game. They jumped out to a 16-12 lead after the 1st quarter, led by nine at halftime and expanded their lead to 56-43 after the 3rd. The blue & gold used a large 54 to 36 rebounding advantage to key their success. 

Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) led three scorers in double figures with a double-double. She had 25 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks. Breana Gleaton (Waldorf, MD) finished with 17 points and Michayla Salatel (Geneseo) connected on three 3-pointers and finished with 10. Kimberly Levee (Dansville) hit a pair of 3-pointers and chipped in six.

The Lady Pioneers shot 42.6% from the field for the game, connected on 7 of their 21 attempts beyond the 3-point arc, and hit 60% of their foul shots.

Jean-Ann Korona led the Lady Spartans with 18 points. Jordan Smith and Ali Cochrane each chipped in 10. D'Youville shot just 25.4% from the field and 18.2% from 3-point land but kept themselves in contention by hitting 29 of their 41 foul shot attempts.

The Lady Pioneers hit the road on Sunday when they travel to Newport News, VA to battle Apprentice.
