Pioneers Tame Bengals

The Alfred State women's basketball team had a huge advantage on the boards as they defeated Maine Fort Kent 65-53 on Sunday afternoon. The Bengals entered the game ranked #2 in the latest USCAA DI poll.

The blue & gold started quick and led 21-9 after the 1st quarter. UMFK cut into the lead a little in the 2nd but the Pioneers held a 33-24 at the break. The Bengals stormed back into the game and cut the lead to 43-41 and trailed 48-43 after three quarters. The Pioneers built back their lead into double-digits and sealed the victory.

The duo of Breana Gleaton (Waldorf, MD) and Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) were key down in the paint for Alfred State (7-4). Gleaton scored 19 points on 8 for 11 shooting. She also grabbed eight boards and passed out six assists. Bialecki finished with 14 points, 13 boards, five assists, and four blocks.

Kelly Kane (Wellsville) and Kimberly Levee (Dansville) came up clutch with eight points each. Levee also grabbed nine boards.

Alfred State shot 35% from the field and was 7 for 10 from the foul line. The team grabbed 25 offensive rebounds and held a 66 to 39 overall advantage on the boards.

Bianca Guitierrez led the Bengals (14-6) with 20 points while Savana Jankowski recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 boards. UMFK shot just 26.2% from the field for the game, 20.8% from three, and 55.2% (16 for 29) from the foul line.

The Pioneers are back in action on Tuesday when they host SUNY Poly. Opening tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
